1. Book your council’s bulky waste collection
Every London borough runs a bulky waste service. It is usually the cheapest route, but you normally have to book online, wait for the next available date, and leave the sofa at the kerb or an agreed collection point. Most councils also limit the number of items per booking.
Best for: one or two items, no rush, and an easy place to leave them outside.
2. Donate it to a charity
Charities and furniture reuse projects may collect a sofa that is in good condition, but upholstered furniture usually needs its original fire safety label to be accepted. Stains, tears or a missing label often mean a refusal on the day.
3. Sell or give it away
Online marketplaces work well for newer sofas. The catch is timing — you have to wait for a buyer who can collect, and many will not carry it down stairs themselves.
4. Use a licensed waste collector
A licensed collector comes at a time that suits you, carries the sofa out from any room or floor, and takes it to a licensed facility for reuse or recycling. It costs more than the council, but there is no waiting and no lifting.
Whoever you choose, check their waste carrier licence first. If an unlicensed “man with a van” dumps your sofa, it can be traced back to you and you can be fined.
