How council bulky waste collections usually work
- You book online or by phone with your borough and choose from the available dates.
- Items normally have to be left outside — at the kerb, front garden or an agreed point.
- There is often a limit on the number of items per booking, and some items (such as building waste) are not accepted.
- Rules, prices and waiting times differ from borough to borough, so check your council’s website.
When the council is the better choice
If you have one or two items, you are not in a hurry and you can get them outside yourself, the council service is usually the most economical option.
When a private collector makes more sense
- You need it gone now — moving out, end of tenancy or a delivery arriving.
- You can’t carry it out — upstairs flats, no lift, or heavy items like wardrobes and sofa beds.
- It’s more than a few items — a room, a garage or a whole house clearance.
- It’s mixed waste — garden waste, DIY rubble and furniture in one go.
Whichever you choose
Never leave items on the street without a booking — that counts as fly-tipping. And if you use a private company, check their waste carrier licence first.
